Haberdashery Sampler - Block of the Month

This BOM Specifics
Join Julie in the shop 1 day a month for a sew-along style class.

The Fabric Collection

Dawn Heese of Linen Closet Designs channeled the French school girl samplers and the beautiful blue antique floral she picked up in the vintage haberdasheries in France. These are specialty retailers that sell buttons, trims and notions well-worn lace, cross stitch samplers from long ago, for sewing and dressmaking. Dawn pays homage to these shops with cross-stitch print, birds, florals, and detailed geometrics in rich navy olive, and red mixed with neutrals for an antiqued effect. Coordinating wovens plus quilt projects by Dawn and a pretty BOM quilt by Nancy Rink round out the collection. Finally, several 108” quilt back options round out this beautiful group, for the BOM or your own projects!

The BOM Quilt Design
Nancy Rink surrounds a fractured star with baskets of appliquéd flowers to create the focal point for this medallion style quilt. She skillfully combines the lovely florals, sweet geometrics, and rustic wovens of Dawn Heese's Haberdashery collection with traditional pieced blocks.

Haberdashery traditionally refers to a shop that sells men's clothing and accessories. However, in the realm of quilting, it takes on a slightly different meaning.

A quilting haberdashery is a place that specializes in the supplies and tools needed for quilting. This would include:

  • Fabrics: A wide variety of quilting cottons, flannel, and other suitable materials.
  • Notions: Items like thread, needles, pins, bobbins, and safety pins.
  • Quilt batting: The fluffy material placed between the quilt top and backing.
  • Backing fabrics: Heavy-duty fabrics for the quilt's underside.
  • Binding: Fabric strips used to finish the quilt's edges.
  • Quilt rulers and templates: Tools for accurate cutting and piecing.
  • Cutting tools: Rotary cutters, mats, and blades.
  • Sewing machines and accessories: Although not always sold in haberdasheries, they are often associated with quilting supplies.

Essentially, a quilting haberdashery is a one-stop shop for quilters, providing all the necessary materials to bring their creative visions to life.
